Introduction
I found myself looking for a YouTube video to watch as I ate dinner the other night and I stumbled upon an Eric Decker highlight video. First, yes, my YouTube algorithm should be called into question if it’s showing me suggestions such as Eric Decker highlights. But second, do we remember this guy? He wasn’t really anything special at all, but he was always just kind of there. He was on that great 2013 Denver Broncos team led by Peyton Manning and I remember he was on the Patriots for a minute, but that’s pretty much it. Still he is somehow burned into my brain as being a reliable target for Tim Tebow and Manning (I never thought in my entire life that I would use Tebow and Manning in the same sentence).
Why He Should Be Remembered
I’m not even sure that “should be remembered” is even the right way to phrase this because he had about a four year prime. It should be “Should Be Remembered As A Way To Start An Obscure Wide Receiver Conversation With Your Boys’ or “Should be Remembered As Who Not To Bring Up On A First Date.” Guys, no girl cares at all about Eric Decker, let’s just be honest with ourselves here. But regardless, I vaguely remember him on the Broncos until Manning got there, but that’s probably because Kyle Orton and Tebow were throwing him the ball. As mentioned, his prime started at the 2012 season and went to the end of 2015. During that span, he accumulated 326 receptions for 4,341 yards and 41 touchdowns. An average season for him during this time would be 81 catches, 1,085 yards, and 10 touchdowns. That’s not bad at all. He certainly wasn’t the most skilled or most talented guy, but he had this sneaky quickness to him and was a fairly good route runner.
Why He’s Not Remembered
Decker simply is not remembered because he has no memorable moments or accomplishments. Sure the guy may have had strong hands, but he’s just another guy on the long list of wide receivers that were successful with Peyton Manning. In fact, he may be more known for being the guy that’s married to Jessie James Decker, who is an American country pop singer. If you were to ask me who is more famous, Erick Decker or Jessie James Decker, I would say Jessie ten times out of ten and I’m the dude that found himself watching Eric Decker highlights at dinnertime.
Where He Is Now
A quick Google search and one can see that Decker is a co-funder of Kittenish, which appears to be a clothing brand. He also appears to be a happy husband and father which is something that everyone loves to see. Looks like Decker’s talents extend beyond the gridiron, something that has to be respected.
