Nickname: Bad Porn
Introduction
There are a few things that I remember about Corey Maggette: he was on my team in NBA 2k13 when I played MyCareer on the Detroit Pistons, he was yolked, and he has a top five sports nickname of all time.
Maggette was drafted by the Seattle Supersonics in the 1999 NBA Draft, but was traded on draft night to the Orlando Magic. His rookie season was nothing special and that summer he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. Here is when Maggette started to make a name for himself as he showcased his leaping ability and willingness to consistently draw contact and get to the free throw line. Maggette spent eight seasons with the Clippers before he inked himself a five year, $50 million contract with the Golden State Warriors. He only would play out two seasons with the Warriors before he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks in 2010. He then bounced around the league before ultimately retiring in 2013.
Why He Should Be Remembered
Alright, I know that you just quickly skimmed through that just to get to the part where we talk about his nickname. That’s alright, I don’t blame you. So originally while on the Clippers, Maggette’s teammates called him “Maximus” based upon his gladiator approach and how he attacks the rim. Now while that’s cool and all, it still does not match being dubbed “Bad Porn.” This nickname stemmed from his time in Golden State, with the idea being that there was a lot of penetration and scoring with him, but whoever was watching still wasn’t happy with what their eyes were showing them. Can you just imagine a drunken Warriors fan just screaming at the top of their lungs “AH MAGGETTE! YOU’RE LIKE BAD PORN YOU BUM! SCREW YOU!” There really is something so beautiful about sports.
So yes, Corey Maggette’s nickname alone should earn him some reasoning as to why you should remember him. Sure, he was a solid player for a bit, an athletic forward that was putting up about 15 a night, but there has been a lot of those guys in NBA history. There is only one that’s called “Bad Porn.”
Why He Is Not Remembered
As just previously mentioned, there’s been a lot of guys like Corey Maggette. It’s very easy for him to slip into the dust of the NBA history books as he has no real accomplishments (other than earning a great nickname, but to be honest I doubt that he really tried to work for that). He was a name in the 2001 Dunk Contest, where he competed against Baron Davis (a name that is a little too well known to make this blog site), but both of them eventually lost to Desmond Mason (a name that is certainly not too well known to make this blog site). All in all, if it wasn’t for my love of hilarious nicknames, Maggette may have been one of those players that completely slipped from my radar.
Where He Is Now
Maggette has been a basketball analyst for a few places. He worked with Fox Sports as well as the Chicago Bulls broadcast team. He also was a part of the inaugural season of the BIG3 and won the BIG3 Championship with his team Power back in 2018. He also appears to be a notable figure in his community, giving back to those that may need help. He seems like a good dude or at least someone that could laugh at the fact that people called him “Bad Porn.”
